WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) released a timeline for the relaunch of Eastern Senior High School (SHS), including details about the principal candidate review process. DCPS has slated a Principal Candidate Forum on April 9 for community members to meet and question the candidates.
“Our goal is to provide engaging and challenging high school options in every neighborhood that prepare students to succeed in college, careers and life,” said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. “We only have one chance to reopen Eastern and we’re committed to continuing to engage the community every step of the way.”
Eastern SHS will begin accepting incoming 9th grade students fall 2011, giving the incoming school leadership a full planning year. The decision to begin admitting 9th grade students has been dependent on identifying and hiring an excellent principal. With strong candidates in the queue, the next step is ensuring that he or she has ample time to plan appropriately.
“The hiring process is underway and we look forward to hearing the Eastern Community’s invaluable feedback,” said DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee. “We now have the exceptional caliber of candidates that we need to move forward, and we made the decision to respect their requests to fulfill current obligations. When selected, any one of the candidates will be able to hit the ground running.”
The Principal Candidate Forum will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 9 at Eliot-Hine Middle School, 1830 Constitution Ave. NE. Participants in this process will be asked to:
- Attend an advance session April 7 to learn more about key principal competencies.
- Review information about each candidate, which will be distributed at the advance session.
- Commit to attend all candidate sessions on April 9.
Renovations of the Eastern SHS building are underway. When completed, Eastern will have bright and comfortable academic environments, a modernized auditorium and gymnasium, and upgraded electrical systems to support state-of-the art technology.
