A Moment of Silence on Friday

In memory of the Newtown, CT victims

Friends –

Along with the nation, we at DC Public Schools are deeply saddened by the horrific events that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut last Friday. The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School changed their small town and our country forever.  While this tragedy is rooted in an abhorrent act of violence, the outpouring of support, of open hearts and open arms in the wake of this shooting is testament to our strength as a community and as a country.

With that in mind, on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at 9:30 a.m., our country will mourn together the tragic loss of life during a moment of silence. I ask that you join me in this moment of silence to reflect and pay respects to the children and adults who lost their lives last week.

As law enforcement continue to investigate what happened, we at DCPS remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping our schools safe, welcoming, comforting and encouraging environments for our students and our school staff. We also remain committed to listening and providing resources where necessary to help address any fear or confusion that our students may be experiencing in response to the Newtown school shooting. These are difficult, uncertain and turbulent times, but together, we will get through it.

Yours,

Kaya Henderson
