WASHINGTON, DC – District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) has proposed that the former McGogney Elementary School building be permanently closed and that the previously consolidated MC Terrell/McGogney school remain at the MC Terrell site.
MC Terrell and McGogney consolidated in 2006 and the consolidated school has been housed in the MC Terrell building for the past three years. This move to formally close McGogney will not affect any personnel changes nor will it cause any disruption to students.
The decision to close the McGogney building further highlights DCPS’ commitment to best using its resources to support the success of its students by eliminating inefficiencies. Monies that had originally been earmarked for upgrades to the McGogney building would now be redirected to Terrell in the Master Facilities Plan and any future modernizations of the Terrell building would take place during the summer, avoiding an additional move for students and staff.
Initially, DCPS had proposed that the programs be combined in the McGogney building. However, in light of recent facility upgrades to the MC Terrell building and the size and flexibility it offers for future improvements, DCPS has determined that this is the better course of action.
If the proposal is finalized, the now vacant McGogney building would transfer to the District Office of Property Management.
