WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) released the snow make up calendar for the 2009-2010 school year. DCPS students lost four-and-a-half days of instruction, due to record-breaking snow storms in early February.
“With this calendar, our goal was to fully restore the time lost and to maximize instruction before the end of the school year,” said DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee. “We considered all options, surveyed teachers, consulted parents and the WTU to create a schedule that is practical, instructionally sound and mindful of budget constraints.”
CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS
- March 19 will convert from a Professional Development day to a regular instruction day.
- May 17, a parent-teacher conference day will now also be a regular instruction day.
- June 18, a current half day will convert into a full regular instruction day.
- We will use the designated make up days June 21 and June 22.
- The last day of school for students and teachers is June 22.
- Summer school begins Monday, June 28.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
DCPS explored a number of options including adding time to individual instructional days, converting Emancipation Day (April 16) into a regular instructional day and adding time over Spring Break, ultimately these scenarios were too costly.
