DCPS Students to Showcase Knowledge of Geography on Tuesday in Seventh-Annual GeoPlunge Tournament

On Tuesday, DC Public Schools students will compete in the city-wide GeoPlunge Geography Tournament organized by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, Arent Fox LLP, and DC Public Schools. 

This year, students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 from 32 DC elementary and middle schools, as well as home-schooled students, will compete in teams of three for the GeoPlunge Cup along with many other trophies and awards.

 Dozens of local law firms, businesses and individuals are sponsoring the participating schools and many of the sponsors also are acting as coaches for the teams.

The games are played with a set of cards representing the 50 states. Tournaments include three different GeoPlunge card games that teach geography in a fun-filled competition that encourages students to learn facts about the states, including state capitals, border states, large cities, time zones, and state rankings in size, population and entrance into the United States.

The competition can be intense and visually captivating, and the camaraderie among players inspiring as students showcase their knowledge, sportsmanship and determination in a unique game that tests academic and teamwork skills. In recognition of the positive contribution GeoPlunge has made in DC Public Schools, Mayor Vincent C. Gray has named November 15, 2011, “GeoPlunge Day” in Washington, D.C.
