WASHINGTON, D.C. – Hundreds of District of Columbia Public School (DCPS) students from 11 schools will attend the Annual White House Egg Roll on Monday April 5, 2010. Today, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee, and State Superintendent Kerri Briggs accepted more than 900 tickets from U.S Secretary of Education Arne Duncan at J.O. Wilson Elementary School.
“Since their first days in office the Obama Administration has lead an unprecedented effort to engage DC public school children,” said Mayor Fenty. “School visits, educational activities and celebrations like the Annual Egg Roll continue to build an enormous amount of good will among students, teachers and families and we’re grateful to be included again this year.”
This year’s theme, “Ready, Set, Go!,” encourages kids 12 and under to lead healthy and active lives. The event is tied into the First Lady Mrs. Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative, a national campaign to combat childhood obesity. Each school attending the Egg Roll has demonstrated academic progress and has programs in place that promote health and wellness.
“This year’s Egg Roll will be another extraordinary first-time opportunity for the DCPS community,” said Chancellor Rhee. “We are always looking for ways to promote student achievement and reward students for their hard work, and the U.S Department of Education along with White House have been important partners.”
The annual White House Easter Egg Roll will take place on the South Lawn, students and families will enjoy sports, cooking classes, live musical performances, storytelling and the traditional Easter egg roll.
