Dual Language Education Programs

Dual Language
This popular and successful program allows students to learn a second language while learning grade level academic content. Dual Language Education programs are enriched educational programs in which students learn a new language by studying grade level content curriculum in two languages.
Research supports the immense benefits of bilingualism. Mastery of two languages increases mental flexibility, strengthens problem-solving skills, and leads to higher scores on verbal standardized test scores in English. In addition, bilingual individuals tend to be more accepting of others and open to new and creative ideas.
Research has shown that non-English speaking students in a dual language program close the language gap more quickly than students in another type of academic program.
The preschool and pre-K grades at Tyler Elementary are full immersion (all instruction in Spanish). In grades Kindergarten-3rd grade, students learn through a dual language approach, in which classes are taught 50% in English and 50% in Spanish.
For school year 2012-2013, Tyler Elementary will offer dual language through 4th grade.
Dual Language programs are offered at Bancroft, Bruce-Monroe, Cleveland, Columbia Heights Education Campus, Marie Reed, Oyster-Adams, Powell, and Tyler Elementary.
