Tutoring Support – Supplemental Education Services (SES)

Bookmark and Share

Did you know that more than half of DCPS students are eligible for a free after school tutoring program?

Supplemental Educational Services service delivers extra instruction to students in grades K-12 who receive free or reduced lunch and attend Title I Schools.

The instruction is delivered by tutoring companies approved by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and is free of charge for students and parents. Eligible students can receive tutoring in Reading, Language Arts, Science, and/or Mathematics.

Services are provided outside the regular school day, which can include after‐school, before‐school and Saturday. Tutoring companies or providers may deliver services in the school or at home. They each have their own program; the number and duration of sessions varies for each provider.

For more information, download the 2011-2012 SES Handbook.

The SES handbook is also available in Spanish, French, Chinese and Amharic

Who is Eligible?

Students who attend one of the 80 schools in school improvement year two or more and have signed up for the free and reduced meals program at their school.

How do you apply?

First, decide what tutoring program is the best fit for your child. Over 40 different organizations offer tutoring -- in schools, online, in your home, one-on-one, in small and large groups, and offer a variety of academic programming, including help in reading, language arts, math and science. You can find more information about these providers in our SES handbooks, available at all eligible school offices and online.

Once you have chosen a suitable provider, you can fill out an application available at your schools office.  If your school doesn't have an application, call us at (202) 442-5509 and we'll get your information over the phone.

Applications are also available in Spanish, French, Chinese and Vietnamese

When are applications due?

All applications must be turned in to your school's office, directly to our office (1150 5th St SE), or to your chosen tutoring provider by Wednesday, November 2, 2011. Unfortunately, we can't accept late applications.

Who gets accepted?

Although over 25,000 children are eligible for services, we only have funding to provide tutoring for about 1,800 students.  We rank students who apply by academic need to ensure the students who most need tutoring are first in line.  Because we know how important it is to be and stay on grade level early in ones academic career, we have also prioritized students with high academic need in elementary school testing grades.

School Year Number of Eligible Students Number of Student Participants
