The K-12 Out of Boundary Lottery

The Out‐of‐Boundary Lottery is a service offered by DCPS to allow parents to apply for available seats at a school other than their child's assigned school(s). To find your child's assigned school(s), please visit our school profiles page. From that page input your address, then filter the results by “in-boundary” to see what school(s) your child is assigned.

This lottery is not for children attending their current school as an out‐of‐boundary student (see Fast Facts) or for those seeking admission to a selective citywide high school.

Fast Facts: 

  • The Out‐of‐Boundary Lottery application period for the 2012‐2013 school year begins on January 30, 2012 and ends on February 27, 2012.*Please text LOTTERY to 91990, sign up for email notifications, or check dcps.dc.gov/oob one week prior to the opening of the lottery for specific opening and closing times.*. 

  • Each applicant may apply to up to six out‐of‐boundary school programs. 

  • The lottery application must be completed online at; no paper applications will be accepted. 

  • Results will be posted online on March 2 and mailed home by March 9. 

  • Applicants who receive a seat in the lottery must accept the offer by April 2 by returning the “Letter of Intent to Accept Lottery Seat” to the accepting school. Applicants must also submit a complete enrollment packet by May 2 (including DC residency verification) in order to secure the seat. You must be prepared to prove in-boundary and sibling preferences at this time.
