They stood on the same spot where Martin Luther King stood.

They looked out at the reflecting pool on the National Mall where hundreds of thousands of civil rights supporters gathered on Aug. 28, 1963, to hear him speak.

And they recited the words to his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” to connect with the man who helped change the direction of civil rights in America.

On Jan. 13, about 115 Watkins Elementary School fourth graders visited the Lincoln Memorial as they have for the past seven years to broaden their understanding of the King legacy.

“The speech offers a holistic process of self discovery, allowing the children to relate to Dr. King on a personal level. This makes it real for them,” said Brandon Eatman, principal of the Capitol Hill Cluster Schools.

This year, the entire Watkins Elementary School community was present with children from all grade levels participating in various educational and inspiring activities at the Watkins Elementary campus and the Lincoln Memorial.

Media outlets were on-hand Jan. 13 to capture the annual event for radio, television and print. Here are some of the stories they told about Watkins Elementary’s King tradition.
