The White House’s Other Residents
March proved to be a month of powerful politicians, hard-hitting athletes and green-thumb gardening for DCPS elementary school students at the White House.
In early March, students from Powell Elementary School rubbed elbows with members of the 2010 Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks hockey team and players from the Washington Capitals as part of the school’s partnership with first lady Michelle Obama and her Let’s Move! campaign. During a visit to the White House, the students got a chance to hit a few slap shots and meet President Barack Obama.
In mid-March, students from Bancroft and Tubman elementary schools helped the first lady replant the White House garden on the South Lawn with elementary spinach, peas, lettuce, broccoli, blueberries, raspberries and other vegetables and herbs. Before the planting began, the first lady greeted the students and talked to them about trying different vegetables and discussed the Let’s Move! initiative. Students from Bancroft have been helping out with the garden since its inception, and Tubman works closely with the White House Chefs through the Chefs Move to Schools Program.
