The undefeated Wilson High School girls’ soccer team shut-out challenger Bell Multicultural High School, part of the Columbia Heights Education Campus, to win the DCIAA girls’ high school soccer finals Saturday at Eastern High School.
And, in a matchup that mirrored last year’s finals, the boys’ soccer team from Bell Multicultural High School won its game against Wilson in a 2-1 decision for its second consecutive championship.
For the past three years, Bell and Wilson have competed against each other in the DCIAA boys’ soccer finals with Wilson taking two championships and Bell winning last year’s contest. This year’s finals was as exciting as the teams’ coaches expected it to be with Bell tying the series at two championships each in four years.
Last year, the Wilson High girls’ team bested rivals School Without Walls in a come-from-behind DCIAA championship victory in extra time. This year, Wilson girls won 6-0 for their second consecutive finals win.
Boys coaches from each school say soccer is gaining popularity in the district and teams are improving as the quality of coaches and discipline of players improves.
