LGBTQ Engagement 

A Plan to Create an Inclusive School Community

DCPS is working to make our schools safe and inclusive for our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students, staff, and families. We are committed to welcoming all families into our schools, to foster a strong sense of community among families, and to help families engage fully in their children’s education. We have a responsibility to ensure that every one of our students feels safe, accepted, and nurtured and that all of our staff work in a safe and inclusive environment at all times. Through these efforts, we can truly ensure that students not only feel supported, but that they develop into the healthy, happy young adults they all have the potential to become.

DCPS’s Plan to Create an Inclusive School Community was developed to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning students, teachers, staff, and families are safe, happy, welcomed and respected in our schools. 

This plan was developed by DCPS’s LGBTQ Steering Committee of central office staff, school leaders, school staff, students, parents, local community groups and national experts. DCPS staff is working with school to implement the plan, prioritizing the school liaison program, school staff trainings and the development of DCPS policies for SY 2011-2012.

LGBTQ Steering Committee Meeting - July 11, 2011

Overview: 

The goal of this meeting was for the Office of Youth Engagement to update the Steering Committee on its current implementation of the plan to create a welcoming and respectful community for LGBTQ students, staff and families in every school.
