Volunteer in Our Schools
We welcome volunteers who want to use their skills and resources to help our students succeed. There are a number of ways to get involved.
Find a Volunteer Opportunity
One Time: If you are looking for a one time opportunity, we recommend you use NeighborGood, a searchable database with DC specific volunteer opportunities.
School Day: If you are interested in volunteering during the school day, use the school profiles link to identify schools that may be a good match. Please reach out directly to the schools to explain what you would like to do and when you are available.
After School: If you are interested in volunteering after school, or in the evening, please reach out directly to one of our vetted community based organizations.
Process for Becoming a Volunteer
DCPS does NOT process or fingerprint volunteers placed at charter schools, private schools or non-DCPS sites.
Volunteers are processed and fingerprinted on a walk-in basis on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM. DCPS Central Office is located at 1200 First Street NE—10th floor, Washington, DC 20002, one block from the NOMA/Gallaudet (formerly New York Ave) Metro stop on the redline.
Note: Starting March 31, 2014, DCPS will no longer accept paper applications for volunteer fingerprinting. While we recommend completing the online application before coming to the office to save yourself time, there will be computers and staff available on the 10th floor to assist with the online application during walk in hours.
Bring the following documents to the DCPS fingerprinting office on the 10th floor.
Potential volunteers with an active secret or top secret federal security clearance should complete the federal security clearance verification letter in lieu of being fingerprinted with DCPS. The original signed verification form, copy of a state issued photo ID and TB test taken within the last 12 months can be dropped off or mailed to DCPS Volunteer Office—12th floor at 1200 First St. NE, Washington, DC 20002.
PLEASE NOTE: Volunteers for Beautification Day or other one-day service events are not required to complete the clearance process.
