Early Childhood Academic Programs

Below are a series of brief descriptions of the main curricula being implemented in DCPS Early Childhood classrooms. If you are interested in learning more about how these curricula are being implemented in a specific school, visit an open house or contact the school directly for more information. 

Tools of the Mind

"Tools of the Mind is a research-based early childhood program that builds strong foundations for school success by promoting intentional and self-regulated learning in preschool and kindergarten aged children."

Montessori

"The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood."

Reggio Emilia

The Reggio Emilia Approach is an innovative approach to Early Childhood Education that values the child as strong, capable and resilient; rich with wonder and knowledge. Every child brings with them deep curiosity and potential and this innate curiosity drives their interest to understand their world and their place within it.

Creative Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum is a comprehensive, research-based and proven curriculum that supports active learning and promotes children’s progress in all developmental areas.

Dual Language

The following schools are implementing a Spanish/English Dual Language model in the Pre-Kindergarten program:
