Office of the Chief Academic OfficerÂ
The Office of the Chief Academic Officer is focused on ensuring that every child, in every classroom, has access to engaging instruction. By providing a clear vision and tailored services, we aspire to serve as an effective support structure to schools as they develop and enhance sound instructional practices in all classrooms.
How We Help Schools
The Effective Schools Framework serves as the foundation for reform at the district level and in schools. It describes the six key elements that we believe, based on our own experiences as well as independent research, are necessary for a school to be most effective at raising student achievement. This document serves as a guide for school leadership teams as they continuously strive toward improvement. In addition, it describes the role that the District Office should play in supporting schools in this important work.
To ensure that our principals have the support they need to implement the Effective Schools Framework, we launched the Principals Academy in Fall 2008. These full-day professional development workshops occur every month and are focused on at least one of the six elements in the framework.
We have also developed a school evaluation tool, the Quality School Review (QSR). This tool, which is aligned directly with the Effective Schools Framework, is used to provide an in-depth analysis of a school’s quality beyond standardized tests scores. It includes school visits, classroom observations, interviews with parents, students and teachers, and other measures that are not necessarily reflected in standardized tests.
Finally, the Teaching and Learning Framework elaborates on the Teaching and Learning section in the Effective Schools Framework. This document provides a common language to discuss instructional practices and teacher actions. It also provides clear expectations for teachers and will drive coherent, robust professional development, systems of support and evaluation.
