Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, DC has implemented a new name for its general statewide assessment system, which includes assessments in English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics and science. The District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessments of Progress in Education (DC CAPE) include the DC ELA assessment (DC ELA), the DC Math assessment (DC Math) and the DC Science assessment (DC Science).
The DC CAPE assessment is computer-based and matches the high expectations of the Common Core State Standards, requiring students to think critically and solve real-world problems. It assesses what your child is learning in school and helps teachers and parents know if students are on track for success in college and careers.
Students in grades 3–8 and students enrolled in Algebra I/II, Geometry, and English I/II will take the DC CAPE test.
How to Prepare
The best preparation for the DC CAPE tests is the rich instruction students are receiving every day in DCPS schools! See this link to learn how you can support your child’s learning.
What to Expect
Testing Window: In School Year 2024-2025, the DC CAPE test will be administered in April and May. Students are not testing every day during this time. Each school will determine its testing schedule and will let you know exactly when your child will be testing.
The results of the 2025 DC CAPE assessment will be released in fall of 2025.
