National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA)
For the ninth year, DC Public Schools (DCPS) has continued steady growth on the NAEP TUDA, which assesses and compares student performance across urban school districts in large cities.
Overall, DCPS’ performance in reading and math showed significant gains from 2017 to 2019. DCPS students grew by five points in 8th grade reading and seven points in 8th grade math from the 2017 test. DCPS students also saw an increase of one point in 4th grade reading and an increase of four points in 4th grade math.
DCPS has seen continuous improvement over the course of the last ten years. Since 2009, DCPS students have grown by 11 points in 4th grade reading and 15 points in 4th grade math. Over that same period, DCPS 8th graders have grown by 11 points in reading and 18 points in math.
Since 2009, DCPS has increased the percentage of students scoring proficient in every grade and subject and decreased the percentage of students scoring below basic. In the same time period, the performance of students receiving special education services has substantially increased in both subject areas and grade levels, increasing nearly 29 points in 4th grade reading, 21 points in 8th grade reading, and 37 points in 8th grade math.
