Parent and Community Advisory Boards

Introduction

At DC Public Schools (DCPS), our families are our strongest partners. Our Family and Community Engagement Core Beliefs are as follows:

  • The DCPS community extends beyond the school walls.
    • Students, teachers and staff, central office, families, partners, and greater DC make up the DCPS community.

  • Families are experts of their child and partners in their success.
    • All families care about their children, want them to succeed, and are capable of supporting students’ growth. Families are their child’s first teachers, and we value them as co-educators.

  • DCPS cannot do this work in isolation.
    • We value the entire DCPS community as key contributors to student success. It is only through collaboration between DCPS and our families, communities and partners that we will be able to accelerate student outcomes.

  • Equity of voices and access to DCPS leadership is essential to this work.
    • We genuinely listen to our community, respect their varying needs and opinions, and work hard to ensure equal access to decision makers when influencing policy and programming.

As an extension of these beliefs the Chancellor has established an advisory board. Throughout each school year, the Chancellor and DC Public Schools (DCPS) Leadership meets with parents and guardians to share more about DCPS priorities and guide leadership in their implementation of key policies and initiatives.

2020 – 2021 Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Board

Overview: The Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Board will serve as a mechanism for parent leaders to directly inform the Chancellor about their perspective on the vision and direction of DCPS, with a focus on equity, race and diversity in DCPS, and the role of parents in schools. The Chancellor’s Advisory Board consists of 32 DCPS parents or guardians (4 per ward) who have at least one child in DCPS. Board members’ appointed term is one year to provide the opportunity to different parents and guardians each school year. The application opens in late spring of each year and is posted on DCPS’ website and social media accounts.
