
Mark Walker has taught Special Education in a variety of positions in DCPS and in the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area over the past fifteen years. He was a Teacher Mentor for three years in DCPS, working with first- and second-year teachers in all content areas, K-12. He was selected to be a part of the DC Teaching Fellows’ very first cohort, earning an Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) in Special Education from George Washington University. He has a K-12 certification in Special Education as well as two other endorsements. Mark also has two other advanced degrees, one in History (M.A.) and another in Cultural and Philosophical Studies (M.A.).
Mark is an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University, teaching numerous courses in Special Education in the graduate school of Education and with off-campus programs in DC, Virginia, and PG County. His primary focus of teaching and research is in the areas of adjudicated and incarcerated education, affective behavioral management, curricular adaptation and design, differentiated instruction, legal issues and public policies/practices regarding students with disabilities, and working with students with ASDs (autism spectrum disorders).
Outside of the classroom, locally, Mark has worked with the DC Teaching Fellows, DC Reads, and Teach For America Programs as an instructor providing professional development and targeted training for teachers, K-12. He speaks, trains, and consults with local and national educational agencies headquartered in DC. Nationally, Mark is an instructor, presenter, and consultant who works with schools and districts throughout the US focused on at-risk and special education students. He has travelled extensively with the US Department of Education as part of the “Teacher-To-Teacher Initiative” (2004- 2008) providing instruction and training for teachers throughout the US He was chosen as a model teacher in Special Education, receiving national recognition and accommodations from the US Department of Education.
Mark will be serving as a master educator for Special Education.
