
Oscar Ramírez joined the master educator team in 2010 after more than thirteen years in the classroom and seven years training teachers. Oscar was born and raised in León, Mexico, where he earned a B.A. in Communication at the Iberoamericana University. He also worked in a local television station as the producer and director of a show for pre- teens and up; an experience that shaped his professional interest in pedagogy and the use of media for educational purposes.
In 1997, Oscar began teaching in the School of Languages at the University of Guanajuato, Mexico, where he became a certified ESOL instructor. Oscar continued his pedagogical education in language acquisition and obtained his certification granted by The British Council and the University of Cambridge. Oscar has taught Spanish and English as foreign languages, become a certified teacher trainer, and tutored in French and Italian. He was also the secretary of the Guanajuato, Mexico Chapter of MEXTESOL International English Language Teachers Organization.
In 2003, Oscar moved to Washington, DC where he began teaching first grade at Oyster- Adams Bilingual School. After six years of successful student achievement in Spanish literacy and second language acquisition, he became the first dual language coordinator at the same school. While performing his administrative functions in this new role, Oscar also worked with teachers to embed the use of multimedia and the development of cognitive academic language proficiency skills into the curriculum. Additionally, Oscar taught a course in communication and multimedia presentation skills to eighth graders.
Prior to his incorporation to the master educator team, Oscar was also a member of the dual language teacher leading team at the former Office of Bilingual Education (OBE), now known as Language Acquisition Division (LAD) in DCPS, where he continues collaborating. Furthermore, Oscar has provided his professional services at other organizations such as the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) on teacher training and curriculum design; and at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on the development of ADMONGO curriculum; a series of videos, and didactic materials for a course focused on critical thinking skills.
Oscar holds an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Bilingual Special Education from George Washington University. He is passionate about world cultures and languages, art history, and international epicurean experiences. Oscar has been a member of the language acquisition master educator team for the last five years.
