Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School
Penelope Miller has been in education in Washington, DC for the last 20 years. She has held various roles in her education career, from pre-school teacher and adjunct faculty to assistant principal, and most recently, a resident principal in DCPS schools. She feels honored to be working on a doctoral degree at American University in early literacy intervention and educational leadership. Her role as a mother of two and wife to her incredible partner are most humbling and rewarding.
Ms. Miller has centered equitable education and recognition of the whole child throughout her career. Through her work as a special educator and school leader, she has worked with teams of educators to examine educational practices to ensure all students are accessing content with high levels of engagement and success. She has also worked with stakeholders to build more open and responsive systems to the benefit of students. In leading a team of math teachers in her previous elementary school, she and the team were able to build teaching practices to actualize an 11-point gain in PARCC scores. She is also proud of the work she did to develop and build the literacy practices and systems in grades kindergarten through 5th that are responsive to all student’ needs and leverages the expertise of multiple teachers for the ultimate benefit to students.
Ms. Miller is proud of the relationships she has built with educators, parents, and communities. She believes in the magic of childhood and that our communities have a responsibility to ensure we are doing everything in our power to give students the skills, strength, and support they need to envision and build the future of their dreams.
