Mayor Bowser to Celebrate School Without Walls, Named #1 High School in DC by US News & World Report

(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, October 16, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by District education leaders to celebrate School Without Walls for being named the #1 high school in Washington, DC by U.S. News & World Report. The ranking highlights the school’s excellence in academic performance, graduation rates, and college readiness, based on state-required assessments and other key indicators of student success. 
 
Established in 1971 in Foggy Bottom, School Without Walls is a DC Public Schools selective high school that has become one of the many outstanding schools within DC’s public education system and in the nation. In 2010 and 2018, the school was recognized by the US Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School. According to DC School Report Card data, nearly all students at School Without Walls approached, met, or exceeded expectations in ELA and 91.7 percent of students approached, met, or exceeded expectations in math. Nearly all students at School Without Walls graduated within four years of their first ninth-grade year and nearly all 12th-grade students participated in an AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment course. 
 
Washington, DC continues to serve as a national model for urban education. Over the past two decades, the District has made deep and sustained investments in public schools, leading to drastically improved student achievement, increased teacher retention and pay, and high parent satisfaction.
