Thanks to a generous donation by the Abramson Family Foundation, a new scholarship will be available through the District of Columbia College Access Program (DC-CAP) to Cardozo High School students beginning this spring. 

The Tower Scholarship will award $5,000 a year for up to five years to students interested in majoring in business. Ten students a year will receive the scholarship for Cardozo High School’s graduating classes of 2013-2017.

“What a great opportunity for Cardozo students to help pursue their college dreams,” said DCPS Chancellor Kaya Henderson. “I’m thankful to The Abramson Family Foundation for their generosity and excited for our students as they begin to finalize their college plans.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have at least a 2.25 cumulative GPA, demonstrate leadership, tenacity and perseverance and plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university with a major in business or business-related field.

“When I heard the news I was overjoyed. Due to the generosity of The Abramson Family Foundation, 50 students over the next five years will have an opportunity to receive scholarships,” said Cardozo High School Principal Tanya Roane. “I know that our students will be delighted with the news of this wonderful scholarship opportunity.”

The scholarship will recognize deserving Cardozo students who best illustrate an interest in business or business related majors, and demonstrate leadership, tenacity and perseverance, qualities displayed by the scholarships benefactor, Albert “Sonny” Abramson.

Abramson was a real estate developer who founded the Tower Companies, one of the region’s largest real estate companies. Mr. Abramson graduated from Old Central High School in 1935, which would later become Cardozo High School.

To apply, students must attend the DC-CAP Pre-College Seminar after graduating from high school. Students have to maintain full-time college enrollment (12 credit hours) each semester and major in business or business related field.  Students receiving the scholarship must maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA at a four-year college or university.
