Wilson High School Students headed to the National Science Bowl

The Wilson High School is headed to the National Science Bowl after clinching their seventh consecutive win at the regional level. This account of their success and their achievement comes from Jenna Wade, co-captain and a senior at Wilson:

Tucked away on the left wing of Wilson High School in the physics lab lies the heart of the Science Bowl Team. So few people know what science bowl is that finding members has been an issue especially recently. The unofficial coach, Ms. Benjamin likes to select underclassmen who display natural talent and an affinity for the sciences to join the team. Two years ago, I was invited to join the team, but due to other obligations I was unable to participate until last year. This year I got promoted to co-captain of the team.

Because science bowl covers such a broad range of topics, proper practice and training is difficult. As a co-captain I manage the team and practices, which are held every Friday during lunch. Typical practice consists of sample questions, but most of the knowledge they know either from classes or through independent study. This year our team was well prepared for the regionals, winning with a score of 302 over seven rounds. However, further study is needed if our team is going to do well at nationals this spring.

At our school varsity sports teams shadow academic teams like Science Bowl, but most of our support comes from Ms. Benjamin, who has sponsored science bowl for longer than I have been at Wilson. Although she is not our official captain this year, she is our cheerleader on the sidelines. The Science Bowl team at Wilson has taught me, and I hope others, that it is okay to be brainy.
