Nick Whitman

Nick WhitmanWhile most students look forward to earning one undergraduate degree, Nick Whitman, a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School, is preparing himself to earn two undergraduate degrees from two separate academic institutions in four years. Nick will be enrolling in a joint program between Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary and says he is looking forward to receiving a true liberal arts education, while also incorporating a focus on theology. During his high school experience, Nick was involved with Operation Understanding DC, an organization that brings together Jewish and African American youth to learn about leadership and promote respect, understanding, and cooperation. Through the program, the group took a “powerful” two week trip that loosely traced the Freedom Rides where they met with social justice leaders and activists including Tommie Smith, the athlete who raised his fist on the podium in the 1968 Olympics. Looking ahead, Nick says that he is looking forward to being “challenged and stepping out of my comfort zone.” He says his time at Wilson has prepared him for this next step. “I had great teachers here who have really pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and helped me figure out what subjects I really enjoy.” #DCPSGoesToCollege
