DC Public Schools PARCC Scores Released for Grades 3-8

(Washington, DC) In the new PARCC results released today, 25 percent of DC Public Schools (DCPS) students met or exceeded expectations on the grades 3-8 English language-arts (ELA) assessments, while 22 percent met or exceeded expectations on the grades 3-8 math assessments.

“With the new baseline set by these PARCC results, we will work to ensure that these scores improve each year by continuing our strategic investments and working with our community,” said Kaya Henderson, Chancellor of DC Public Schools.  

“These results are sobering,” continued Henderson. “But we know our students can meet the new, higher standard we set for ourselves, and we know from the recent NAEP-TUDA results that we can and will continue to improve.”

DCPS PARCC Performance by Achievement and Grade Level

Among all 7th graders who took the assessment, including those who took Algebra I or Geometry, 16 percent of students met or exceeded expectations, compared to 8 percent of students who took the 7th grade math assessment. Among all 8th graders who took the assessment, including those who took Algebra I or Geometry, 24 percent met or exceeded expectations, while 3 percent of students who took the 8th grade math assessment met or exceeded expectations.

Both Levels 4 and 5 on the PARCC assessment are considered proficient and on-track for college and career readiness. Level 5 is defined as “exceeded expectations.”

DCPS PARCC Performance

Across DCPS, 25 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in ELA, while 21 percent met or exceeded expectations in math for grades 3-8 and in the high school results.

DCPS released its school-by-school PARCC results for high school in October. Prior to adopting the PARCC assessment, DCPS used the DC-CAS tests to measure student performance, which indicated steady improvement each year.

Investments Across DCPS

DCPS has made strong investments to ensure improved results on PARCC each year. The Cornerstones Initiative will ensure that all DCPS students receive the same exciting, rigorous academic experiences that will accelerate their learning. In addition, DCPS has extended the school day at 41 schools and extended year at one school to ensure students get more instructional time.
