If you have attended events around DC, you may have seen Anacostia High School senior Makayla Cooper behind the lens of her camera. Although she has not yet graduated, Makayla has already been working as a freelance photographer at events around the District including the recent Broccoli City music festival. Her work as a photographer has taught her the importance of being patient and learning how to work with different types of people. Makayla says that she is drawn to photography because it is a way to capture important moments in people’s lives and help them preserve memories. This fall, Makayla plans on majoring in visual arts at Morgan State University. Through a dual-enrollment program at Georgetown University, Makayla has already had the opportunity to explore college-level arts courses. She says the courses that she took were “amazing” and taught her how to independently manage her workload in a college environment. Makayla says she hopes that other students dedicate themselves to finding out what is important to them. “Find your passion because that is what really motivates you to do all of the right things.” #DCPSGoesToCollege
