2018-19 Extended Year Calendar

Thursday, April 19, 2018

DCPS has released the final calendar for 2018-19. We are also re-evaluating our approach to Extended Year to maximize the additional instructional days and professional development opportunities, and to minimize potential summer learning loss. To fully implement this model in the 2019-2020 school year, we must begin modifications in the upcoming 2018-2019 year.

First Day of Pre-K at Extended Year Schools: Thursday, August 16, 2018

What’s New This Year

  • More Condensed School Year. In order to end the school year at approximately the same time as Traditional calendar schools, we need to shorten the school year. The school year will last for 46 weeks instead of the prior 48. This compares to 44 weeks for Traditional schools.

  • Earlier Summer Break in 2019. Students and staff will conclude the school year by June 24, 2019 at the latest, and start their summer break much earlier than in the past.

  • Full Alignment with Traditional Calendar Schools from October-May. Except for the beginning and end of the school year, there will be complete alignment between both calendars. This should ease planning on families that interact with multiple DCPS schools and keep things clearer for everyone.

  • No Intersession or Fall Break. To accommodate the shorter school year, we had to remove fall break and the two intersession weeks. This also helps other non-instructional days like Professional Development and End of Term days align with Traditional Calendar schools.

  • Return to Four Terms for Opportunity Academy Schools. The two Extended Year Opportunity Academy schools – Luke C Moore and Roosevelt STAY – will return to a model of four terms and two semesters. We will no longer use the trimester model. This change is in response to school concerns about the difficulty of serving students that transfer between schools during the year.
