Andria Caruthers

Andria Caruthers is an Instructional Superintendent in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), where she supervises 15 campuses serving approximately 6,500 students. She believes in creating learning environments where students have the agency, opportunity, and support to shape their futures. Now in her fifth year supporting elementary schools, she previously supervised Cluster VII’s middle schools and education campuses. Over the past three years, schools under her supervision have demonstrated growth that is closing achievement gaps across DCPS.

Since joining DCPS in 2009, Andria has led at both the school and district level. During her five years as Principal of West Education Campus (now John Lewis Elementary School), enrollment increased by 15%, she launched the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) and led Cluster VI in student growth and achievement on end-of-year assessments. As Deputy Chief of Leadership Development, she oversaw the district’s principal preparation program, the Mary Jane Patterson Fellowship, and participated in the Wallace Foundation’s Professional Learning Community.

Andria began her career teaching third through seventh grades in Los Angeles Unified Public Schools and Metro Nashville Public Schools.  Her commitment to developing her own leadership includes participation in Teach for America, New Leaders for New Schools, the Leverage Leadership Fellowship, and Cambiar’s Catalyst Systems Leader Fellowship.  A former Division I athlete, she brings a team-centered approach to developing leaders, pairing high expectations with opportunities to learn, practice, and celebrate progress. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University.
