DCPS Employee Background and ID Cards

Welcome to the DC Public Schools Employee Background Check and ID Badge Homepage. Securing a criminal background check prior to employment, volunteering, contracting or obtaining licensure provides a hiring or licensing authority an important resource, which aids in the evaluation of the applicant.  Below, we have provided important information regarding the background screening and ID badge process. This Fingerprinting Office manages the background clearance process along with the issuance of your DCPS photo ID. There is no cost associated with obtaining a background check and/or ID badge.

  1. Complete the online background clearance application: DCPS Employment Clearance, and click “Save” to submit your responses. No printing is necessary.
  2. Visit DCPS during normal business hours for fingerprinting. Be sure to bring your government-issued photo ID (i.e. driver’s license or passport).

Volunteer Clearance

The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) would like to thank you for your interest in volunteering in our schools. Each year, thousands of motivated individuals use their skills, resources, and knowledge to impact the lives of children living in the nation's capital. In order to be cleared to volunteer with DCPS, you will need to follow the steps outlined below. You must have a confirmed placement at a DC Public School before this clearance process can begin. Unfortunately, we are unable to make exceptions to these requirements.

  1. Confirm a placement. If you do not have a placement, please use the school profiles to reach out to a local school to discuss your interest in volunteering. If you would like to volunteer with an established partner, view the list of programs vetted by the Office of Out-of-School Time Programs.
  2. Complete and save this application. You must complete the Volunteer Clearance Application in one sitting. Please allow yourself at least 15 minutes and have all school and program contact information available.
  3. Submit a negative Tuberculosis (TB) test taken within the last 12 months. We are able to accept negative results from a skin test, chest x-ray or blood test. You must complete your TB test, and have a copy of the results prior to being fingerprinted. Those who fail to bring these results to the fingerprinting office will not be permitted to be fingerprinted, and no exceptions can be made.
  4. State issued photo identification. You must bring your identification with you when you report for fingerprinting. The following forms of identification are accepted: driver's license, non-drivers ID, passport, and military ID. Other forms of identification will not be accepted.

Student Teacher Clearance

Student teaching in DC Public Schools is an excellent way to prepare yourself for your own classroom. You will work alongside excellent, experienced teachers who are invested in working with you to develop your skills, and within a school system that is on the forefront of education reform.

The Student Teacher placement process is managed between your university program and the DC Public School (DCPS) directly, as Human Resources does not have a placement process or mandate for student teachers. We encourage you to use the school directory, available on our main website, to reach out to particular schools that you would like to host you as student teacher. You can view this list here.
