School(s): School Without Walls @ Francis-Stevens
Why DCPS?
My husband and I are firm believers in public education. I feel strongly that all children are entitled to excellent public education, and that learning is the key to a happy and healthy life. When it was time for our daughter to start school, it was an easy decision to send her to the School Without Walls at Francis Stevens and to seize that opportunity to become more involved in public school in Washington DC.
Why I am excited to be a member of the Chancellor's Parent Cabinet?
I am so excited to be a part of the Chancellor’s Parent Cabinet. Since it is my daughter’s first year in DCPS, it is foremost a way to meet and engage many DCPS staff and parents from across the city. Serving on the cabinet, I also hope to act as a conduit for my fellow SWWFS and Ward Two parents to advocate for the things that matter to our parent and student community. Finally, I think education is one of the most important components of a child’s life, and as such I am keenly interested in how best to structure and provide quality and meaningful education to children in Washington DC.
Issues I care about most as a parent:
When I think of my three children, and indeed any child, I am keenly aware that kids have basic needs that must be met before they can hope to succeed academically. A stable home environment, proper sleep, nutrition, exercise and rigorous development of self-esteem and self-worth are a few of the most important that come to mind. I understand that educators needs to focus on the school day, but it is my hope that if we as a city prioritize having solid and supportive communities of parents and families, we can better serve the needs of all of our children.
