Courtney Francis, a senior at Roosevelt High School, doesn’t have to wait until the start of the school year to get involved at Norfolk State University. After completing a rigorous application process, Courtney has been accepted to play the alto saxophone as a member the Norfolk State marching band, and he will head to campus this summer to participate in a marching band training program. Courtney first learned to play the alto saxophone when he was an eighth grader at Takoma Education Campus, and he says that music has played a major part in his high school career. “Music gave me more confidence and made me get out of my comfort zone.” He says his favorite part of being involved in the jazz band is “just being able to express myself when I’m on stage and getting that spotlight.” At Norfolk State, Courtney plans on majoring in music and pursuing a career as a jazz musician. Courtney has high praise for the teachers he has had at Roosevelt. “They are like superheroes.” #DCPSGoesToCollege
