Through her Information Technology and cyber security courses at Phelps Architecture, Construction, and Engineering High School, Makiya James has discovered her passion for cyber security. She says that she has always been interested in technology and computers, and that her courses at Phelps exposed her to “hacking for good reasons.” In addition to her technology classes, Makiya says her favorite course at Phelps was DC History, which taught her about the city she calls home. Whether you are focusing on architecture, carpentry, CISCO networking, electrical, or HVAC, Makiya says that Phelps sets its students up for success after graduation. “It really helps you when you’re trying to get into the working world and real life because you already have a skill set.” When she gets to North Carolina A&T State University this fall, Makiya says that she is looking forward to being independent and having more responsibility. “I want to be able to show my family that I can do it and make them proud.” #DCPSGoesToCollege
