Anacostia High School senior Derrick Rowell grew up thinking he would attend college at North Carolina A&T, but when he visited the campus, something unexpected happened. “I’m a pretty religious guy, and God told me A&T wasn’t for me. But at Tennessee State University, it just clicked.” Derrick will be attending Tennessee State next year as an Economic Club scholarship winner, and he plans to study journalism to ultimately become a sports journalist. “I’m a big fan of sports, so I want to study and write about sports.” Outside of his six AP classes over the past two years, he’s been a member of the Tennis Team, the National Honor Society, and the recorder for Anacostia’s basketball games, and he’s most excited to be in a new environment in college. His advice to his younger peers? “Make the decision that’s right for you.” #DCPSGoesToCollege
