Banneker High School senior James Poindexter might be the only student who found his college by checking his email spam folder. “There was an email from Drexel that said, ‘We’re different. Are you different?’ and I said, ‘You know, Drexel, I think am different.’” Now he’s headed to Drexel University in Philadelphia next year on an academic scholarship, which he’ll use to study computer science. He ultimately hopes to work in game design and development, an interest he discovered while taking classes at Howard University through the DCPS dual enrollment program. He says that Drexel “feels like home” because it’s a mix of city and college, and he’s most looking forward to having his own space. When asked what he wants people to know about his high school, he says that Banneker students aren’t defined by the “prestige” people think they have: “We go through things like every other school does. Other schools have the capability to do what we do.” #DCPSGoesToCollege
