After moving to Washington, DC from Ethiopia, Kalkidan Melesse encountered teachers at Dunbar High School who were willing to go above and beyond to support her transition to a new school system. “It was really hard for me at first, but with the help of my teachers, I was able to succeed.” When she needed additional help, she says her teachers stayed after school to help her. Looking back at her high school career, Kalkidan says she had “the best experience and now I’m ready to graduate!” This fall, Kalkidan will enroll at the University of the District of Columbia where she is planning on majoring in biology. After graduating from UDC, she would like to follow in her parents’ footsteps as a doctor. Thinking about her time at Dunbar, Kalkidan says, “You just feel at home.” #DCPSGoesToCollege
