“I want to serve the United States and solve problems for the Marine Corps,” says Aurel Npounengnong, a senior at Columbia Heights Education Campus. In pursuit of this goal, Aurel will be participating in American University’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, which will prepare him for future service in the United States Marine Corps as an engineer. “I’m always trying to mess with every type of electronic I have, dissecting it to see how it works.” During his time at CHEC, Aurel says that his Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) program has been a defining part of his high school career. “JROTC focused my energy,” says Aurel. “I was all over the place, but JROTC taught me discipline, which served me throughout my high school years.” In his JROTC program, Aurel served as the commanding officer with a battalion of 80 cadets. As the youngest in a family of seven, Aurel says he always wanted to be a leader. When thinking about his definition of leadership, Aurel says, “Leadership to me is being able to put your own personal desires aside for the common goal of the team.” #DCPSGoesToCollege
