Chancellor Henderson Convenes Second Parent Cabinet

Thursday, March 26, 2015
Twenty-four District of Columbia Public Schools parents to serve as representatives of their school communities

District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) Chancellor Kaya Henderson today announced 24 DCPS parents who will serve on the second cohort of the DCPS Parent Cabinet. Launched last year, the members of the Parent Cabinet represent all wards and grade levels – elementary, middle and high schools – and reflect the diversity of the city. Chancellor Henderson will meet monthly with Parent Cabinet members and facilitate conversations regarding program and policy decisions. The first meeting was held on Wednesday, March 25.

"I am excited to continue the Parent Cabinet for a second year and to bring back five members from last year’s cabinet. I am also pleased to include a member from Luke C. Moore High School, whose voice will especially inform discussions regarding our alternative high schools,” said Chancellor Henderson. “Our parents provide valuable insights and perspectives that help us better understand what issues concern our communities most and what solutions we should pursue. Last year’s Parent Cabinet worked with our budget team to help us refine an interactive tool that allows parents to review and compare school budgets. Their insights were incredibly helpful and allowed us to present a more useful tool to create greater transparency and accessibility of the information during the budget process."

The parents and community members were selected from a pool of more than 90 applications. Chancellor Henderson convenes three cabinets, including one with principals and teachers.
