We appreciate the Council’s hard work in regards to reviewing and approving our budget. The Council has agreed to the vast majority of our budget proposal.

District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) Chancellor Kaya Henderson issued the following statement today after the DC Council’s Committee on Education unanimously approved DCPS’ budget for the 2014 fiscal year.

“We appreciate the Council’s hard work in regards to reviewing and approving our budget. The Council has agreed to the vast majority of our budget proposal. Our fiscal 14 budget reflects many of the priorities that Councilmember Catania and I share, including cooperation between DCPS and charter schools, increasing student enrollment and reducing truancy in the District.

“We are deeply disappointed that on the heels of the announcement of our collaboration with Achievement Prep, the Council would, without consultation, cut into the budget for this partnership, which could be detrimental to our joint effort. Our hope is that moving forward, the committee will consult with us before making these kinds of decisions so that we can realize our shared vision for DCPS. We look forward to continuing to work with the Council to ensure our budget supports all of our students, teacher and schools.”
