District of Columbia Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson issued the following statement on the passing of Dr. Floretta D. McKenzie, who served as superintendent from 1981 to 1988.

"Dr. Flo was a mentor, a friend and a legend. She took me, and so many others, under her wing and into her heart.  Over our many meals and conversations, we shared stories, and she shared lessons I hold dearly and turn to often. Today, I remember the greatest of those lessons from Dr. Flo -- that we should never forget to reach back and bring others along. I am very proud to count myself as one she brought along. My thoughts and prayers are with her family in their time of grief and mourning. Rest in peace, my friend, and know your legacy lives on in all of us."
