(WASHINGTON, DC) — On Saturday, August 6, the DC Public Schools Language Acquisition Division (LAD) will host a Back to School Fair at MacFarland Middle School for all the English Language Learners. The fair is designed to provide vital resources and orientation to families new to the U.S. and to DCPS ahead of the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
“DC Public Schools is proud of our student diversity, and we always look for ways to include all our families and communities in their children’s learning,” said Chancellor Lewis Ferebee. “Our award-winning Language Acquisition Division has been hard at work to provide our diverse school community with the information and resources they need to prepare for the start of the new school year and to ensure no families, regardless of their origin of language, are left behind.”
At the back-to-school fair, workshops will be held in multiple languages so DCPS English Language Learner families can complete enrollment for the new school year, receive guidance on how to support their children at school, and learn about legal rights for newly arrived families. The Language Acquisition Division will also provide interpreters onsite to ensure language is not a barrier for any attendee.
In addition to the workshops, there will be fun family activities and food, and free childcare. Attendees can also receive their COVID-19 vaccine, and information will be available about how families can visit a local medical clinic to ensure their student is up to date on their childhood vaccinations to attend school.
DCPS English Language Learner Families can RVSP on Facebook, Eventbrite, or just stop by on Saturday.
