District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) will celebrate, honor and observe the work of our teachers through a social media campaign, surprise visits from District leaders and a unique “Teacher Shadow Day” opportunity during National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4-8).
Beginning today and extending through Friday, DCPS Chancellor Kaya Henderson, principals, parents, central office staff, community members and others will take to social media with #DCPSlove and the “Love My DCPS Teacher” sign. DCPS is encouraging everyone to show their appreciation for DCPS teachers by taking a picture with the sign provided on the DCPS website and uploading it to social media.
In addition to the social media campaign, Chancellor Henderson will join Mayor Muriel Bowser, DC Councilmember Charles Allen (Ward 6), and DCPS leadership in presenting gift cards to teachers nominated by their principals during surprise visits to DCPS’ 40 targeted schools throughout the week. The gift cards were made possible through the DC Public Education Fund in partnership with Capital One’s Hometown Assist Program in an effort to celebrate teachers who are passionately serving in schools where our students are the most in need.
DCPS Central Office staff also will have the chance to see our teachers in action during Teacher Appreciation Week in DCPS’ first-ever Day in the Life: Teacher Shadow Day. This is a great opportunity for teachers to share their day-to-day experiences and for Central Office staff to personally thank and support DCPS teachers in any way that’s helpful, such as planning lessons to assist with in-class projects.
“Great teaching is one of most magical things you will ever see – and great teachers are the hardest-working, most inspirational people you will ever meet,” DCPS Chancellor Henderson said. “We take every opportunity to recognize and celebrate the fabulous work our teachers perform every day. And we hope everyone in the city can take some time this week to thank a DCPS teacher in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week.”
