On Saturday, March 7, 2015, over 100 students from across the District of Columbia will take part in the first-ever District of Columbia Public Schools Archery Tournament. Currently, 34 schools across all grade bands offer archery during physical education. Schools began expanding archery programming to students in grades 4-12 in the previous school year after the U.S. Department of Education awarded DCPS with the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant. The funds, received over three years, allowed schools to buy archery equipment, and provide professional development and training to teachers to ensure student safety and success. Archery teaches students lifelong fitness skills, as well as skills that translate in the classroom, like focus and determination.
Student participants will include individual competitors, as well as teams of at least 12, which must include four male and four female students. At the tournament, students will shoot from the 10 meter and 15 meter ranges. Each student will shoot one practice round and three scoring rounds from each distance. Each round includes five arrows. Fifteen of the arrows will count for scoring. An arrow in the outermost ring counts for one and points increase inward, using the international archery scoring model. A shot in the innermost ring, or the bull’s eye, will be scored as a 10. Awards will be given out to the top 3 individual male and females in the elementary, middle and high school categories, as well as the top team in those groups. The top archers will qualify to advance to the National Archery in the Schools Program National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky held from May 7 -9, 2015.
