Modernizations
School modernizations in the District of Columbia are managed through a collaboration between the Department of General Services (DGS) and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), and involve the renovation, update, historic preservation, overhaul or, in some instances, the razing and re-construction of a DCPS facility to better align a school's design with its evolving programmatic needs.
A key component of a school modernization project is the establishment and implementation of a School Improvement Team (SIT) during the planning and design phase of the project. Throughout the planning, design and construction phases, the SIT is engaged to provide DCPS and DGS with feedback.
