District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) supports the use of instructional field trips to enhance the educational objectives of the school. A field trip is defined as a planned curricular or extracurricular experience for students directly related to and correlated with a specific unit of study or specialized function of the school. Field trips are recognized as a viable means of providing educational opportunities that would not be available in the classroom. All field trips undertaken under the auspices of the DCPS system must be planned and executed in compliance with the rules and guidelines stated in this document. This directive supersedes any other DCPS policy on field trips and student travel.
This new policy update is in effect as of January 2, 2025.
