OSSE is the licensing agency for all DC educators, including DCPS employees. Employee Services monitors licensure status and messages employees of their current licensure status. In compliance with the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) highly qualified regulations, we also assist parents with requests to know the professional qualifications of classroom staff.
Questions regarding specific licensure requirements and individualized application concerns should be directed to their office at (202) 741-5881 or to their website, osse.dc.gov.
Current employees who would like to apply for a new or renewed license should work directly with OSSE, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education. Licensure application information can be found on their website at osse.dc.gov or contact their office at (202) 741-5881.
OSSE requires that an individual applying for licensure demonstrate that they have cleared the background check within the last 2 years through the DCPS fingerprinting process. OSSE is provided clearance information automatically and electronically for those individuals that meet this requirement. If it has been more than 2 years since the fingerprints were last taken, the employee must report to School Security at Central Office to have new fingerprints taken. Once the new fingerprints have been cleared by the FBI, the results will then be sent to OSSE automatically and electronically. Non-employees may also submit a licensure application to OSSE, but they must complete a background search independently.
